Godzilla Island – Story Arc 14

Godzilla Island – Story Arc 14

1997

Directed by Shun Mizutani

The Godzilla Island convoy keeps on trucking, giving us another story arc filled with giant monsters, alien invaders, and random women showing up to save G-Guard Commander’s butt! Story Arc 14 introduces us to some new characters, and also introduces an element of ridiculousness to the show that’s just a tad bit crazy. But in a fun way. If you weren’t aware that this show was made for kids, then you will be fully informed by the events in this Story Arc. For those of you stumbling across this on internet searches, head over to Story Arc 1 to get a lowdown of what Godzilla Island is. For those of you following the story, read on!

We got a new cast! Who are these new chicks in the credits? Let’s find out!

G-Guard Commander (Jiro Dan) – G-Guard Commander runs the Godzilla Guard unit on Godzilla Island. He’s all alone except for sassy robot Lucas, so of course he’s bored out of his skull normally. He seems to have been stationed there because it’s a low-priority assignment they could dump someone who can’t work under pressure, because that’s exactly what he is. Luckily Torema shows up to save his pants. I do not know if he has a name but it may be Oji.
Lucas (Kenichiro Shimamura) – Annoying robot, Godzilla Island-style! Makes sarcastic remarks, and seems to be even mean at times. An annoying Kenny kid in floating metal sphere form. He must be destroyed! Translates from monster language to Japanese.
Misato (Kaori Aso) – The new monster doctor who is dedicated to her craft. Works hard, argues with G-Guard Commander, and flies Medical Jet Jaguar around all the time.
Landes (Kaoru Ukawa) – The new Xilien assigned by Giant Dark Emperor to take over Godzilla Island. She has crazy eyes. Always using a pink fluffy fan. Her ship is another Vabaruda.
Camero (???) – Landes’s floating robot, sounds bored when he talks. Just what we needed, another annoying Lucas. Hopefully he can be the entertaining Meowth to the lame Pikachu. Looks suspiciously like MST3K’s Cambot (Last design)!
Narrator – (Yutaka Aoyama) – He’s not a character but the guy who recaps the previous episode in the beginning of the episode. That means thirty seconds of each three minute episode is Narrator recounting events, padding running time beyond levels I want to think about. He’s a typical Japanese male announcer, amazingly excited and epic about even the most mundane things.
Giant Dark Emperor (???) – Giant flaming head who commands the Xiliens and Planet X. Do not look behind the curtain. The great and powerful Giant Emperor commands you, and can hear your sarcastic backtalk! Still, being a flaming head in space has got to be pretty boring.

Different monster feature in each episode, so we’ll keep track of them in each story arc. The complete Godzilla Island Daikaiju List is located here. We’ll also list any new monster match-ups that weren’t in any film but now exist thanks to this series, such as Manda fighting Megalon or something. The R2 Japanese DVD release is unsubtitled, so most of what is going on will be educated guesses thanks to our limited Japanese speaking ability. But here at TarsTarkas.NET we don’t need no stinking subtitles!

Featuring the monsters –

Anguirus – Godzilla’s first foe and now a close friend. His only power is a spiky back but he’s brave on the battlefield. One of the usual residents on Godzilla Island who shows up to watch the action as stories progress.
Baragon – Big ears, big horn on the nose, likes to dig underground. One of the usual residents on Godzilla Island who shows up to watch the action.
Godzilla – The King of Monsters. Godzilla is pure awesome in giant fire-breathing lizard form. Everyone who comes to Godzilla Island wants a piece of Godzilla. And they all get kicked to the curb.
Godzilla Junior – Godzilla’s lamest son is here also. Looks likes some sort of lizard squirrel or something. Give me Minya! I’ll even take nephew Godzooky!
Gorosaurus – Old foe of King Kong who spends most of his days watching whatever happens on Godzilla Island. His special move was to do kangaroo kicks.
King Caesar – King Caesar is King of Zen as well. He’s a Samurai Lion who will kick your behind! He is some sort of Taoist/Shinto priest or something in addition to being a giant monster.
King Ghidrah – THE foe for Godzilla. No one else even comes close. On the show, regularly gets beat up despite working with the Xiliens. Was involved in the destruction of Torema’s home planet.
Mechagodzilla – This is the second Mechagodzilla, which was created by humans to fight Godzilla. Now stationed on Godzilla Island as one of its defenders. Usually automated, but can be piloted at times (and has been by G-Guard Commander.) Usually paired with Moguera.
Medical Jet Jaguar – Jet Jaguar got his medical degree from Daikaiju University. Now he helps the sick and injured monsters on Godzilla Island. That name suits him!
Moguera – The Mobile Operation Godzilla Universal Expert Robot Aero-Type, or MOGUERA, was also built to fight Godzilla, and is also stationed on Godzilla Island to defend it now. In one episode we see Torema pilots Moguera, but other episodes it is unclear who is in control. Moguera can separate into Star Falcon and Land Moguera pieces in the movies, but doesn’t here.
Mothra Leo – a boy Mothra who has extra powers, from the Rebirth of Mothra series. Can zap things with antenna and wing blasts. No one has a good explanation on how male Mothra Leo is supposed to continue the Mothra line. But don’t worry, as an egg magically appears anyway.
Rodan – A prehistoric monster awakened in modern day, Rodan is a former foe of Godzilla who has learned to work with him to fight off the evil monsters. Has some hot springs named after him on Godzilla Island. Will eventually become Fire Rodan, because he did so in the Heisei movie series that was still recent, in addition to giving Bandai another toy.

Episode 129 – A New Enemy

G-Guard Commander and Lucas talk on Godzilla Island, while in space Giant Dark Emperor gives orders to a new spaceship with a new female commander named Landes, who heads towards Earth for new horrible plots. Look out, Godzilla Island! Tsuzuku.

Episode 130 – Landes Appears
Landes arrives at Godzilla Island, with G-Guard Commander thinking this is just another Zaguresu plot. Landes is upset and blasts the G-Guard HQ with a laser bolt. Tsuzuku. Don’t get your crazy women confused, that just makes them more crazy.

Episode 131 – The Commander’s Lie
G-Guard Commander deploys a line of big laser guns (called Hyper Lasers) that are newly installed, Landes is shocked and retreats. Little does she know these Hyper Lasers are not operational yet. She also talks to her floating robot pal Camero (these things are multiplying?) Camero spies on the new lasers (discovering they are inoperable) as we tsuzuku. Now Lucas has a new challenger to the “Most-Annoying” throne.

Episode 132 – Landes’ Challenge
Landes returns and starts blasting things (including the monsters) because the guns don’t work. She also berates G-Guard Commander on the phone because that’s what these villainesses do. You’d think he’d be used to it by now, or at least learn how to hang up. And a mysterious woman is walking around on Godzilla Island, although she’s not that mysterious if you remember that there is another new cast member in the opening credits. Tsuzuku.

Episode 133 – The Monster Doctor Takes Up a New Post
G-Guard Commander gets a page that the Hyper Lasers are working, so he fires them and they tear the crap out of Landes’s ship. She retreats, and then Misato reports for duty at the G-Guard HQ, keeping G-Guard Commander from feeling smug and he even begins to argue with her. Can this guy work with anyone? No wonder he is stationed alone. Tsuzuku for the cliffhanger of “Will G-Guard Commander learn interpersonal skills?”

Episode 134 – It Doesn’t Return!
Monster Doctor Misato gets to work monster doctoring. G-Guard Commander is upset or something. Japanese, why must you be a foreign language? Tsuzuku.

Episode 135 – Landes’ Proposal
Monster Doctor Misato chases Junior around while driving Medical Jet Jaguar holding a giant syringe. I like her now. And who knew Medical Jet Jaguar could be piloted? Stab that Junior, he deserves it! She chases other monsters who also don’t want shots. Doc Misato then goes back to G-Guard HQ right as Landes calls with some new scheme. Tsuzuku.

Episode 136 – The Secret of Godzilla Island
Landes tells some tale about the Secret of Godzilla Island. Didn’t we already have an episode called that? No, it was about the Mystery of Godzilla Island. Anyway, Doc Misato is in Medical Jet Jaguar taking a finally not gay hot springs bath with Godzilla and quizzing him about The Secret of Godzilla Island when a missile is fired at the island. Tsuzuku as the Hyper Lasers are deployed.

Episode 137 – Don’t Touch the Missile
The missile crashes but doesn’t explode. Way to not fire the Hyper Lasers at it, G-Guard Commander! Misato flies over in Medical Jet Jaguar to disarm it, making G-Guard Commander upset. He tells her she’s a doctor, not a missile disarmer (in Japanese, of course) At least she’s doing something. But, Junior knocks over the missile because he’s a moron, and yellow gas starts spewing out of it. Mustard gas? Anyway, this new Weapon of Mass Destruction starts to engulf the island as we tsuzuku. Nice job, Junior!

Episode 138 – Infernal Smoke
The monsters run, but the gas runs out. Camero records all the action and Landes laughs, but it isn’t as joyful as Zaguresu. She had a special type of fun crazy, as opposed to Landes’s scary crazy. Then her ship heads back to Godzilla Island. Tsuzuku.

Episode 139 – Landes Attacks Again
Misato analyzes the mysterious gas, while a giant flying boombox heads towards Godzilla Island. Yes, that sentence is correct. The giant flying boombox is controlled by Landes, who starts playing surf music! What the heck? Tsuzuku. At least it is enjoyable music.

Episode 140 – Now Dance!
So all the monsters start to dance. This is a little ridiculous. But hilarious!

Dansu!
[FLOWPLAYER=http://tarstarkas.net/movies/godzillaislandstory14_clip1.flv,480,390]

Who knew monsters could break-dance like that? Anguirus could serve any invading monster with his mad dance skills. Landes laughs and Doc Misato discovers the gas has something to do with this, which we’ve already figured out. Next, she’ll warn us about an imminent attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Tsuzuku.

Episode 141 – Dance Dance Dance
The monsters dance until the music ends, then drop like flies. As the next song starts up, they must dance again! By night they are slow dancing. Note that frequent hot springs bathers Godzilla and King Caesar are slow-dancing together. Tsuzuku.

Episode 142 – After the Request
Still dancing in the morning, still no effort to shoot down the giant boombox on the part of G-Guard Commander. Nor using Mechagodzilla or Moguera to fight it. G-Guard Commander checks on Doc Misato, who had been working all night, then blasts off in Mechagodzila! Will he finally do something? Tsuzuku to find out.

Episode 143 – There’s Nothing to Do!
Mechagodzilla is shot down by the giant flying boombox as it blasts super-loud music. G-Guard Commander is okay, but a malfunction on Mechagodzilla made it look like it was dancing for a few seconds. That would just be crazy! Doc Misato gets back to work, tsuzuku for future developments.

Episode 144 – The Plan Begins
Misato has found something, and deploys a giant speaker that G-Guard HQ just happens to have on standby. Tsuzuku because we need to stretch it out to another episode before we press the “On” button.

Episode 145 – Dancing the Sunda
Misato turns it on, out comes bad music (or backwards music) that drowns out the other music. So soon an escalation in speaker volumes happens. Both switch the dials to 11, and both explode. This is a success, because then there is no more music. The monsters collapse, so Landes calls King Ghidorah to attack! Tsuzuku.

Episode 146 – King Ghidorah Attacks!
Moguera is sent to fight King Ghidrah, but is blasted out of the sky. G-Guard HQ is razed by King Ghidrah, but then Godzilla gets up to fight. Tsuzuku.

Episode 147 – Defeat King Ghidorah!
Godzilla and King Ghidrah fight. They are evenly matched, but Godzilla is too tired to be able to defeat him. Misako gets in Medical Jet Jaguar and flies over, has some sort of black backpack on. Tsuzuku.

Episode 148 – The Dance of Revenge
Misato blasts King Ghidrah with a whiff of the yellow gas, then starts playing speakers on Medical Jet Jaguar’s back, which blare out the Godzilla Island Theme Song, causing King Ghidrah to dance like he got no pants. And he doesn’t. Landes and King Ghidorah retreat. Then G-Guard Commander and Misato get into another argument. Tsuzuku.

New Monster Match-ups – Moguera vs King Ghidrah

New friends, new enemies, but no new monsters. Until next time! And next time may get here sooner than you think. Or not. Anyway, Story Arc 15 is the next stop, as March of Godzilla Island continues, and it will keep continuing until the end all the way at Story Arc 22! Tsuzuku!

Rated 6/10 (The fan, The eye, Introducing one’s self, Don’t touch the rocket!, I said don’t touch the–never mind, G-Guard Commander gets down)
