Sharktopus hits trilogy! – Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda and Sharktopus vs. Mermantula!

Sharktopus roared to life on SyFy and really kicked the animal combination movies into high gear. And now, Sharktopus is back! Okay, Sharktopus’s baby, Sharktopus, is back. For the first time. I bet they often get the wrong mail… Sharktopus the baby does battle with Pteracuda in Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda! Pteracuda is yet another creature created by scientists to do stuff, and you can probably guess which two creatures it is a combination of. Robert Carradine stars.

Never fret, as Sharktopus will soon return with Sharktopus vs. Mermantula! I helped vote to name this one on Twitter, and Roger Corman is awesome and responds to his fans. The plot of SvM:

In order to take down Sharktopus, Ray Brady, a former basketball player is injected with a transformation serum that alters his genetic make-up to become part man, part piranha and part tarantula. Though, unsuccessful at his first attempt to bring down Sharktopus, Ray injects himself with a growth hormone, increasing his strength ten fold and has a final showdown with Sharktopus in a baseball stadium.

Casper Van Dien and Catherine Oxenberg star, and a clip from the dailies is the video at the top of this article.

Matt Yamashita writes both films, and Kevin O’Neill directs. Both films will undoubtedly be on SyFy, and we will be watching! But will Sharktopus fight a Sharknado? And will we get a SyFy film that combines every animal ever?

Nuigulumar Z (ヌイグルマーZ) with Rina Takeda as a fighting pink teddy bear hits trailer!

Gothic Lolita Battle Bear is the subtitle for Noboru Iguchi’s latest flick, Nuigulumar Z (ヌイグルマーZ), and that is accurate as the day is long. For that pink bear becomes Rina Takeda and faces will be kicked! Plus, it looks like the bear comes to life as a puppet, which means this could easily have been directed by Minoru Kawasaki!

Nuigulumar Z is based on an novel Hōsei Ningen Nuigurumā by Kenji Ohtsuki, which is based on a song by his band Tokusatsu called “Tatakae! Nuigulumar”.

Shoko Nakagawa will play Yumeko Ayukawa, nicknamed Dameko, a lolita-wearing girl who merges with her teddy bear Buusuke to form Nuigulumar. Rina Takeda will play the merged Nuigulumar, complete with pink bear costume. In addition, Takeda also will play a villain character named Kill Billy. Which means we might see Takeda battle herself! Who will win…

Wang Leehom Wang is Chinese superhero Annihilator

Stan Lee Annihilator

Movement lines…ATTACK!

Taiwanese singer/actor Wang Leehom has signed on to be The Annihilator, a superhero created by Stan Lee and Dan Gilroy, and the focus of a multimedia campaign including a film and comic books. The Annihilator will be shot in English (but they’ll probably be some Chinese in the film) and is budgeted at over $100 million.

Stan Lee talks up the story as another superhero story, except the hero just happens to be Chinese. The film will be made with an eye towards worldwide box office (and the casting of a star popular in China and about a Chinese hero is a sure fire way to get access to the lucrative Chinese box office!)

“The Annihilator” will tell the story of a young Chinese man forced to leave his hometown in mainland China amid dramatic circumstances. After time in the United States, he returns home in the guise of the Annihilator, who uses his extraordinary powers to save the world and also explore his roots. One official description added that the character would be “a young Chinese man given a second chance as an international superhero, who returns home to mete out justice.”

This is an interesting play, because there isn’t an established hero to base the film on, yet the budget is very large. Still, the Chinese aspect should fuel enough money to turn a tidy profit, and if the film is good, probably much more than that. With the small amount of films with an Asian male lead, The Annihilator is also a welcome piece of good news. Here is hoping this hero is not a zero.

Artemis Fowl is the next "Next Harry Potter" book to film series you haven't read yet

Artemis Fowl Goggles

I’m Harry Potter with goggles and fashion sense, suckers!

Though from the look of these books, I could read them all in a week. But I’m too busy playing a game. Of thrones. At the moment to read them, but I’ll have plenty of time before the first entry hits theaters. At this moment, all we know about Artemis Fowl the film is that it’s happening.

Plenty of YA books have come and gone from the theaters without making even the slightest of ripples. No star and no director means I can’t call it the new failure, but at the rate studios have been churning out YA fiction books into film to try to find the next Harry Potter (and the next Twilight), eventually something will end up making bank. Sure, Percy Jackson inched by to somehow score a sequel, but Eragon, The Golden Compass, and Alex Rider are among the dead.

Artemis Fowl is an antihero who does both bad and good things, this status can serve to give the series a different flavor from some of the other fantasy fair. Or they’ll just screw it up. Have any of you read the series? If so, do you think Hollywood can turn it into a good film, or will they be using Artemis Fowl as a tax writeoff?

Also because I’m a jerk, I hope that “foul language” is one of the MPAA warnings about Artemis Fowl.

Kickboxer and Bloodsport both getting remakes, but where is the Double Team remake???

Remaking Jean-Claude Van Damme films is all the rage in Hollywood for some reason best known by the coven of witches who determine which projects are greenlit (the Which Witches, for those in the industry!) But those witches have yet to give us the Double Team remake America craves, instead we’re getting the leftovers.

First up is a remake of Bloodsport from Relativity Media, James McTeigue directs a film that has a completely different plot. How is this a remake again?

Relativity’s version will instead focus on the morally-conflicted life of 21st century mercenaries who clash with the underground world of Brazilian Vale Tudo, the martial arts style used by Donald Gibb’s character in the original film.

It has already gone through a pack of writers and set to be rewritten again, a sure sign of a quality story. No one is cast yet.

Besides Bloodsport, Kickboxer is also getting made, helmed by Stephen Fung, the guy who directed those not very good Tai Chi Zero/Hero movies. Once again, no one is cast yet.

Y’all remember the saga of Kickboxer, right?

Kickboxer 1 featured JCVD coming out of retirement and taking to the kickboxing ring after his brother is crippled by the evil guy named Po. Kickboxer then defeats Po via kickboxing and becomes champion of illegal kickboxing.

Kickboxer 2 features actors who are totally JCVD and his crippled brother being gunned down by Po, forcing the third unknown brother, Cousin Cody who lived in a van in Step By Step, to come out of retirement to kickbox the crap out of Po, which he does.

Kickboxer 3 featured Cousin Cody going to South America and being friends with kids and kickboxing some evil dudes.

Kickboxer 4 ditches the kids, Cousin Cody somehow got married, then his wife is kidnapped by Po and Cousin Cody was framed for murder and is in jail. He’s let out to fight in Po’s latest tournament, where he wears no disguise because jail made him hard or something. Eventually a bunch of people get kickboxed, including the new actor playing Po (a Tunisian wearing yellowface) but Po somehow escapes both the film and the franchise.

Kickboxer 5 features Cousin Cody being murdered via newspaper headline, and then Some Guy (Mark Dacascos, the Some Guy of DTV action films) is the new Kickboxer, and he kickboxes South Africans who wish they were as cool as the South African villains in Lethal Weapon 2.

In conclusion, Free South Africa, you dumb son of a bitch!
