So the healthcare debate has caused emotions to run hot and heavy on both sides. From the Republicans recruiting angry mobs to storm townhall meetings and screech and hollar, to the fact that many of said Republican mobs are on Medicare/Medicade/VA benefits/other government services, the whole health care debate is a giant mess. This is punctuated by Barack Obama’s idiotic giveaway to the pharmaceutical industry and his wishy-washy lack of support of a public option, without with any meaningful healthcare reform is impossible. But as progressives slowly force Obama to not be a centrist dirtbag, the conservatives mobs are getting more restless. From gun-toting attention seekers outside presidential speeches to guys ripping up posters of Rosa Parks, things were coming to a head. And one event turned to violence of a media frenzy kind, as an altercation left one man missing a finger!
William J. Rice not only threw the first punch at the rally in Thousand Oaks, CA, but went to the hospital after getting his pinky bitten off thanks to Medicare. Then he showed up on FoxNews for Neil Cavuto and a very bizarre interview. Sadly, there is no video of the actual fight, which would answer a lot of questions (and quell some of the Right’s arguments that it was unprovoked finger biting despite Rice admitting he punched first) The biter remains at large.

Imagine these posts with about 9 million more where macho keyboard warriors declare they wouldn’t get their fingers bitten off, but would beat up the liberal without breaking a sweat, and that’s what it looks like from the right. Wingnut Web will be back, soon, as Obama will be brainwashing America’s children on September 8th, and only a few brave Wingnuts will stand up and yank their kids out of school so they don’t have to see a scary black man talk.
As if anyone at FreeRepublic.com has balls, but that is besides the point. The point is Barack Obama’s 11 year old daughter Malia decided to wear a shirt with a peace sign on it. This simple act turned the normally stupid wingnuts at FreeRepublic.com into frothing at the mouth screeching crazy racists who began a game of one-upping each other on who could be more offensive. The threads created quickly became a firestorm as DailyKos.com spotted them and the story blew up big time, threads were pulled, newspaper articles were written, and it looks like TV will get involved. Below is a summary of the events as best as we can put together:
1 – Malia Obama wears a peace sign T-shirt
2 – FreeRepublic.com posts several threads mentioning her wearing the T-shirt, and offensive posts begin to appear.

What if an 11 year old white kid wanted to wear a swastika? Certainly an outrageous symbol that would certainly upset many people. Can the child wear it? Why not? The peace symbol really riles up a significant portion of our society. It reminds me of the time Billy Ayres and Co. blew up a police station and terrorized middle class America with threats of violence against normal Americans. It is a hate symbol and I find it offensive. So… can an 11 year old white kid wear a tee shirt with a swastika? How about a president’s kid? Why not? Its a symbol of hate. Just like the peace symbol…

Before you dismiss this as only a minority of posters at the site, out of 100 posts on that thread I found only 1 that criticized such remarks. This is not the first time I have seen such an exhibition of blatant racism at Free Republic by members who regularly post there.
Here are my questions:
Does Free Republic condone this type of exercise in free speech?
Are these the type of participants Free Republic is happy to have posting at its site?
What is Free Republic’s policy about posting racially offensive comments?
What is Free Republic’s policy about making sexual insinuations about minors (particularly relevant in light of the David Letterman/Sarah Palin brouhaha)?
Does Free Republic believe its membership accurately represents the conservative movement?
Does the owner of Free Republic believe this kind of discourse is helpful to rebuilding the Republican Party and furthering its goals?

This leads to a MASSIVE threat 1700 posts long and counting where they try to dig up all sorts of dirt on reporter Chris Parry, and Chris Parry registers an account to chat with them.
So we will see the segment on MSNBC tomorrow, and the story is starting to spread throughout the internet. Expect more work on this eventually, but for now I have had enough of Freeper nonsense for one day.
So Senator Arlen Specter of PA announced yesterday that he is switching parties from Republican to Democratic. Specter was a more moderate Republican, and was facing a primary challenge from an extremely conservative opponent who was out-polling him by a lot. This was good news, because conservative challenger Pat Toomey would have never won the overall election, and there would be good chance a progressive candidate got elected. Instead, Specter went into self-serving mode and switched sides. The benefit is the Democrats will now have 60 seats in the Senate, the “magic number” they need to stop filibusters, but the price is we exchanged a good chance of a progressive pickup for a Blue-Dog wannabe who is more concerned with his own career than helping the country. A mixed bag at best, but since Specter is pushing 80 he might not make it to the end of the term starting in 2010 regardless.
As you can imagine, the news of the defection took the Wingnuttosphere by storm! A fury of hate ensued, with many commentors taking up the position that they kicked Specter out. Although Specter was never a real conservative, his party switching is entirely due to self-preservation, and is not because some crazy teabaggers kicked him out. If anything, his departure and primary challenge were signs that the Republican party has left mainstream American and gone down a road of 19th century policies. But you will never know that if you just go by what the wingnuts post online. Let’s go by freerepublic.com to see some typical reactions to the Specter defection:

Today is the day that Freeper and Republican congressional candidate Rosanna Pulido goes up for election against Demnocratic candidate Mike Quigley in Illinois 5th district. We are expecting her to pull in 16%, with 6% as a write-in vote for Abe Lincoln. Will update this by her actual loss amount, and then keep you all posted of any meltdowns that happen after she loses (we’re pulling for crazy!)
TarsTarkas.NET has recently become a powerful investigative journalistic force, a role that took me by surprise because I was just posting stuff. It turns out the stuff has major political consequences for a certain crazy lady running for Congress in Illinois! We wrote long ago in a previous Wingnut Web about how Rosanna Pulido, Republican candidate for Congress in Illinois’s 5th district, posts on the website FreeRepublic.com as “chicagolady” and has said many things that could be thought of as bigoted and hatefilled. This race is largely ignored because she is going to get her clocked cleaned, but I found it interesting that a big party candidate was freely posting racist crap on the internet and no one cared. At all. Sure, her own party was ignoring her, but here is a chance to further humiliate them anyway. The pundits and the media ignored it all.
On the internet, there was small mention of it. First it showed up here. Then a blog showed up archiving even more of Ms. Pulido’s ramblings: Rosanna Pulido is a Freeper. Still, nothing. Finally, a local Chicago paper stumbled across the story after being emailed, and soon got to the bottom of it. Which involved speaking to us! And thus, TarsTarkas.NET was quoted by ChitownDailyNews in the Media Watchdog column written by “Lou Grant”
This lead to a thread on FreeRepublic.com ( http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2214476/posts ) where they quote the ChitownDailyNews article, and the quoted part includes TarsTarkas.NET, thus TarsTarkas.NET is now in Freep-land! Then the fun begins as the FreeRepublic posters begin to insult everyone, including TarsTarkas.NET!
