The poster for the DVD of Asylum’s Princess of Mars is up. It’s got giant spiders (Woola?) and the first glimpses of Traci Lords as Dejah Thoris. And notice the Avatar namedrop on the cover.

Three new names for John Carter of Mars!
Thomas Haden Church, rumored to be Tars Tarkas not long ago, has been confirmed in Pixar’s John Carter of Mars as Tal Hajus, one of the evil Green Martian Tharks. He was the Jeddak when John carter first came to Mars and is eventually killed by Tars Tarkas. But the synopsis for the character given says he is “an ambitious and vicious Thark warrior who is biding his time to be a ruler.” Does that mean a plot change?
Also joining the cast is Mark Strong as Matai Shang, leader of the Holy Therns (the White Martians) I believe they are only in the second and third books (I don’t remember them in the first, but I could be wrong) so there is either foreshadowing, or they are combining stories and making it way confusing.
The third new name is James Purefoy as Kantos Kan, the Red Martian John Carter befriends while stuck in a gladiator-like event, who is a captain in the Helium (a Red Martian city) army.
Lynn Collins on John Carter of Mars
Lynn Collins, who will be playing Dejah Thoris in the upcoming Pixar John Carter of Mars, gives a brief hint of what the pre-production is doing. She says Dejah Thoris is “a priestess of science and letters.” And spills more to MTV:
“We’re actually getting into some hair and makeup tests this week to see what the look is like,” said Collins. “It’s really collaborative and really creative and I’m really excited about it.I think they’re going more like a really great tan, like the best-tan-you-can-ever-imagine type of thing.”
“We went to Pixar and saw some of the workups of some of the fighting that we have to do. I was like, ‘Oh my god, there’s just no guy better for the job. He’s so athletic and wonderful and such a great actor and so positive.’”

See John Carter of Mars! And the first Tars Tarkas that will make it to a completed film. Barsoom makes it to movie form! Take that, Pixar! You couldn’t deal with the small fact of public domain! That even means TarsTarkas.NET could make a Princess of Mars film, even though it couldn’t be shown in the UK because it is still under copyright there, IIRC. But, whatever. Asylum is no stranger to doing ERB works, having done The Land That Time Forgot earlier this year (and coincidentally enough, I forgot to bother to review it!)
