Godzilla Island – Story Arc 20

Godzilla Island – Story Arc 20

1997

Directed by Shun Mizutani

Spies are not cool. Unless they are James Bond, Spy vs. Spy, dead Bothan spies, or Bart Fargo. Okay, maybe spies are cool. So of course spies will factor into the story of Godzilla Island, because when you think plastic monsters, you think spies. Camero goes undercover into G-Guard HQ, Lucas gets ignored, and we all learn a lesson to not accept random packages from the Earth’s Government. Earth’s Government is like Nigerian Bank Transfers – Stay away! But we got some monster fights, anyway. So let’s hop to it! Newbies hop to Godzilla Island Story Arc 1, the rest of us can laugh at the N3wbs and start reading away.

G-Guard Commander (Jiro Dan) – G-Guard Commander runs the Godzilla Guard unit on Godzilla Island. He’s all alone except for sassy robot Lucas, so of course he’s bored out of his skull normally. He seems to have been stationed there because it’s a low-priority assignment they could dump someone who can’t work under pressure, because that’s exactly what he is. Luckily Torema shows up to save his pants. I do not know if he has a name but it may be Oji.
Lucas (Kenichiro Shimamura) – Annoying robot, Godzilla Island-style! Makes sarcastic remarks, and seems to be even mean at times. An annoying Kenny kid in floating metal sphere form. He must be destroyed! Translates from monster language to Japanese.
Misato (Kaori Aso) – The new monster doctor who is dedicated to her craft. Works hard, argues with G-Guard Commander, and flies Medical Jet Jaguar around all the time.
Landes (Kaoru Ukawa) – The new Xilien assigned by Giant Dark Emperor to take over Godzilla Island. She has crazy eyes. Always using a pink fluffy fan. Her ship is another Vabaruda.
Nao (Sho Sawamura) – The latest cast addition to Godzilla Island, and the most mysterious because she came out of nowhere and seems obsessed with food. Who is she? Why does G-Guard Commander seem to know her and get annoyed at her constant talk of food? Will we ever get answers? I sure hope so, because otherwise you have to put up with this explanation for the remainder of the series. At this point I think she is G-Guard Commander’s daughter. I translated Sho Sawamura’s name myself so hopefully it is right.
Camero (???) – Landes’s floating robot, sounds bored when he talks. Just what we needed, another annoying Lucas. Hopefully he can be the entertaining Meowth to the lame Pikachu. Looks suspiciously like MST3K’s Cambot (Last design)!
Narrator – (Yutaka Aoyama) – He’s not a character but the guy who recaps the previous episode in the beginning of the episode. That means thirty seconds of each three minute episode is Narrator recounting events, padding running time beyond levels I want to think about. He’s a typical Japanese male announcer, amazingly excited and epic about even the most mundane things.
Giant Dark Emperor (???) – Giant flaming head who commands the Xiliens and Planet X. Do not look behind the curtain. The great and powerful Giant Emperor commands you, and can hear your sarcastic backtalk! Still, being a flaming head in space has got to be pretty boring.

Different monster feature in each episode, so we’ll keep track of them in each story arc. The complete Godzilla Island Daikaiju List is located here. We’ll also list any new monster match-ups that weren’t in any film but now exist thanks to this series, such as Megalon fighting Dororin or something. The R2 Japanese DVD release is unsubtitled, so most of what is going on will be educated guesses thanks to our limited Japanese speaking ability. But here at TarsTarkas.NET we don’t need no stinking subtitles!

Featuring the monsters –

Anguirus – Godzilla’s first foe and now a close friend. His only power is a spiky back but he’s brave on the battlefield. One of the usual residents on Godzilla Island who shows up to watch the action as stories progress.
Baragon – Big ears, big horn on the nose, likes to dig underground. One of the usual residents on Godzilla Island who shows up to watch the action.
Battra – Evil sister of Mothra who now works for Zaguresu. I guess it’s hard to make a decent living when you are an evil monster, as there are only a few employment opportunities.
Godzilla – The King of Monsters. Godzilla is pure awesome in giant fire-breathing lizard form. Everyone who comes to Godzilla Island wants a piece of Godzilla. And they all get kicked to the curb.
Godzilla Junior – Godzilla’s lamest son is here also. Looks likes some sort of lizard squirrel or something. Give me Minya! I’ll even take nephew Godzooky!
Gorosaurus – Old foe of King Kong who spends most of his days watching whatever happens on Godzilla Island. His special move was to do kangaroo kicks.
King Caesar – King Caesar is King of Zen as well. He’s a Samurai Lion who will kick your behind! He is some sort of Taoist/Shinto priest or something in addition to being a giant monster.
Mechagodzilla – This is the second Mechagodzilla, which was created by humans to fight Godzilla. Now stationed on Godzilla Island as one of its defenders. Usually automated, but can be piloted at times (and has been by G-Guard Commander.) Usually paired with Moguera.
Medical Jet Jaguar – Jet Jaguar got his medical degree from Daikaiju University. Now he helps the sick and injured monsters on Godzilla Island. Becomes Misato’s common ride. Has a loudspeaker backpack. That name suits him!
Moguera – The Mobile Operation Godzilla Universal Expert Robot Aero-Type, or MOGUERA, was also built to fight Godzilla, and is also stationed on Godzilla Island to defend it now. In one episode we see Torema pilots Moguera, but other episodes it is unclear who is in control. Moguera can separate into Star Falcon and Land Moguera pieces in the movies, but doesn’t here.
Mothra Leo – a boy Mothra who has extra powers, from the Rebirth of Mothra series. Can zap things with antenna and wing blasts. No one has a good explanation on how male Mothra Leo is supposed to continue the Mothra line. But don’t worry, as an egg magically appears anyway.
Rodan – A prehistoric monster awakened in modern day, Rodan is a former foe of Godzilla who has learned to work with him to fight off the evil monsters. Has some hot springs named after him on Godzilla Island. Will eventually become Fire Rodan, because he did so in the Heisei movie series that was still recent, in addition to giving Bandai another toy.

Episode 209 – The Great Spy Game
The Anti-Animal Laser Gun’s test fire fails to work. That’s horrible! As the Anti-Animal Laser Gun is G-Guard HQ’s new defense system (and is mobile because it is essentially a giant maser cannon, and I think I called it that in a previous Story Arc.) Lucas gets blamed or something. In space, Giant Dark Emperor interrupts Landes’s attempts to eat a watermelon, where she explains she will have a spy on the island. Camero. Camero is on her ship for once, but will be sent down, and everyone laughs at how evil it is to have a spy. Tsuzuku.

Episode 210 – A Parcel Delivery from the Earth’s Government
G-Guard HQ gets a package from the Earth’s Government, it is Camero, who says he is there to replace Lucas. Lucas is robot sad, but soon Camero has his floating spot next to G-Guard Commander. Camero alerts G-Guard Commander to the arrival of Battra. Camero lets loose Moguera, who scares off Battra. G-Guard Commander is happy and Lucas is sad. Lucas says as much to Misato as we Tsuzuku. G-Guard Commander didn’t suspect anything from that fake ruse? Ugh.

Episode 211 – Lucas’ Great Shock
Misato plugs in Lucas to a computer, but soon Lucas runs off. When Misato tells G-Guard Commander that Lucas is upset, he just laughs. Oh, G-Guard Commander, you insensitive oaf! Actually, you gain some points because Lucas is annoying. Lucas runs off the island, only to be captured in a tractor beam by Landes’s ship the Vabaradu. Tsuzuku.

Episode 212 – The Anti-Animal Laser Gun is Out of Control!
Lucas is put in a cage and sees that Camero is a spy, while Camero covertly controls the Anti-Animal Laser Gun so it drives off, starts up, and begins blasting Baragon, Anguirus, King Caesar, and Rodan! Misato takes off in the Tart-coupe, while Landes has a button on her control panel that will shock Lucas if he ever says anything. Keep using it, Landes! Zap that floating trash can! Camero uses his robot powers to stop the Tart-coupe in midair, and we tsuzuku.

Episode 213 – G-Guard Surrenders!
Misato is out of control in her ship, which could be Camero’s sabotage, or just her Windows Vista crashing. G-Guard Commander takes off in Mechagodzilla to save her. Only Camero takes control and has Mechagodzilla attack Godzilla! Landes gets upset at Lucas saying “Ubon” and shocks him until he deactivates. Then she beams into G-Guard HQ and laughs, as we tsuzuku. WTF with “ubon” being a horrible thing to say?

Shocking!

Episode 214 – There’s Nothing More That Can Be Done
G-Guard Commander tells Godzilla to blast Mechagodzilla, and he does, but then Medical Jet Jaguar and Moguera are sent to attack Godzilla. Baragon, Gorosaurus, and Anguirus jump into the fray to try to help Godzilla. Landes calls G-Guard Commander to gloat, reveal Camero, and say that Lucas is in the trash. Because he is. And Misato runs out of energy as her ship heads to crash. Tsuzuku.

Episode 215 – Reunion
Mothra Leo saves Misato at the last second, while Landes furiously goes through documents to find out the Secret of Godzilla Island, one such document is the documentation for the software Stuffit Expander. Seriously. Thanks goodness for freeze-frame. Lucas wakes up, puts on some discarded Xilien clothes, and uses it to pilot an escape shuttle out of the Vabaradu. Lucas and Misato reunite, and Lucas says he needs access to the main computer. Which Misato has, on her laptop. Camero must not be able to set up firewalls. Tsuzuku.

Episode 216 – The Base Recapture Strategy
The monster fight continues, so Landes has Camero drive the Anti-Animal Laser Gun over to shoot all of them. Misato and Lucas hack into the computer, replaying a loop of the Anti-Animal Laser Gun shooting everyone while in reality the gun and the suit kaiju are all inactive. G-Guard Commander regains control of Mechagodzilla as Misato calls him. Landes sees none of this because of the video loop, which means they are borrowing from Speed here. Tsuzuku.

Episode 217 – Counterattack
G-Guard Commander, Misato, and Lucas confront Landes in the G-Guard HQ control room. G-Guard Commander is in a karate uniform (??), while Misato brandishes a mop (???!!??). Landes beams back to her ship, but Camero is left alone for Lucas to deal with, so they chase each other around the room for a bit. Lucas chases Camero out of G-Guard HQ as we tsuzuku.

Episode 218 – Lucas Endures
Lucas chases Camero until he runs into Godzilla, then memory wipes him or something. Godzilla then slaps Camero into the sea. Landes then fishes Camero out. G-Guard Commander apologizes to Lucas, then they get another package. It is opened with apprehension, but inside is just a watermelon! Ha-ha, tsuzuku. What is with this episode’s obsession with watermelon?

New Monster Match-ups: Godzilla, Gorosaurus, Anguirus, Baragon, vs. Mechagodzilla, Medical Jet Jaguar, and Moguera; Godzilla vs. Camero;

This Story Arc had entirely too much Lucas. It was fun seeing him shocked, so that made up for some of it. Landes gets farther than Zaguresu in that she actually takes control of Godzilla Island (all Zaguresu got was a surrender that was overturned quickly.) The whole plan goes to pot so Landes is back to square one. And now the heroes know that there is Camero running around. What will the next step be? We are starting to enter End Game, as the next chapter is the penultimate story arc, and I say that just because I can finally use penultimate in a sentance and not sound like a douche. Oh, wait, I still do. So ignore that. Join us as March of Godzilla Island continues with Story Arc 21: Blackjack! Coming soon to a theater near you, if you’re looking at this website while using wireless in a theater lobby.

Rated 8/10 (Tractor Beam, New Hair Style, Caged Heat 2!, Saving the day, Stuffit Expander???, Blaster gone wild, Camero rises, New Hair Style: The Sequel)
