Starman – Evil Brain From Outer Space (Review)

Starman Evil Brain From Outer Space

1964
Starring
Ken Utsui as Starman (Super Giant)

Like the other Starman movies, this is edited from 3 episodes of the Super Giant serials of the 1950s. (this one being episodes 7, 8 and 9, Suupaa jaiantsu – Uchuu kaijin shutsugen and Zoku suupaa jaiantsu – Akuma no keshin, and Zoku suupaa jaiantsu – Dokuga Okoku) In this exciting Episode, Our Hero Starman from the Emerald Planet must battle an evil Space Brain! Which lives in a suitcase. Because he’s evil! Just like your father who lives out of his suitcase as he is always away on business while you are left alone watching mommy cry. Don’t leave, Daddy! Please don’t go!

Uh… Sorry. Back to the movie. Evil Space Brain Balazar from Planet Zimar in the Moving Galaxy (the Moving Galaxy? Where is it moving to?) wants to conquer the galaxy. So naturally the first choice of planets to hit is Earth. This worries the Emerald Council on the Emerald Planet, because a nuclear attack on Earth would irradiate their planet as well as much of the galaxy. Somehow. (Geez, Japan, drop a few nuclear bombs on you and you get all paranoid). The Emerald Council decides to again send STARMAN to Earth to stop the Zimarians and Balazar. Balazar had survived an assassination attempt and built a mechanism to keep his brain alive, which is stored in a briefcase now being carried by a man police think is a bank robber on Earth. While running from the police, he accidentally drops the suitcase into the river, while ranting that the suitcase contains a brain from outer space, which is scoffed at. At the police station, the man, Kuwada, is brought in, though the real bank robbers has been caught. Kuwada tells that his boss, Dr. Kurakawa, was under the influence of the Evil Brain, so Kuwada stole it. Dr. Kurakawa phones the police station, and tells police officer Okomoto that Kuwada makes up lots of stories, and Kuwada is let go. Dr. Kurakawa is the very definition of an evil scientist, wheelchaired, complete with freaky pet, a bird, and weird assistant, a one legged ugly man. Kuwada goes to look for the suitcase, but Dr. Kurakawa sends some goons dressed in handkerchiefs to kill him, however Starman intervenes. After a brief battle (well, brief for a Starman movie), Starman takes Kuwada to the house of one Dr. Sakurai, where he explains what is happening and wants Dr. Sakurai’s help in defeating the Brain. Starman tells that Balazar has an army of mutated monsters on Earth, including some that are invisible, and then gives Dr. Sakurai’s children a signaler to call him if they are in trouble. Unlike the last Starman movie, these children are useless, no gun-toting killers here. And Evil Dr. Kurakawa’s One-Legged Goon watches through the window.

Dr. Kurakawa is informed of Starman’s appearance, but begins the plan anyway, and soon monsters begin attacking models of trains and boats– I mean real planes and boats. Kuwada goes to Evil Dr. Kurakawa’s house to try to get a hold of the plans, and the police officer Okomoto follows him, having believed his story now that monsters are appearing. Kuwada is knocked out, and Dr. Kurakawa reveals he is not enfeebled and walks to a secret passageway with One-Legged Goon. Okomoto revives Kuwada.

In the secret Zimarian Base, BATMAN speaks to the troops. Yes, BATMAN. Or at least some idiot in a Batman-like suit. Or Batman’s brother that had a few extra-chromosome’s costume. And all the troops have the bat symbol on their chests also. It is really really creepy. The Batman dressed dudes send a radioactive breathed monster after Dr. Sakurai, and the monster has quite a package! Seriously, that monster must moonlight in the porn biz. The rest of the monster looks very silly, and vaguely bat-like. (I guess to fit in with the Batman theme). The mutant is also armed with solid Cobalt nails, which can cut through Starman’s steel skin.) Starman starts fighting this monster, who after being beaten around for a while, splits into two monsters, and then they both rear-project themselves away (or fly away). Now Dr. Sakurai is working around the clock to find a formula to destroy the Evil Brain.

Human looking mutants begin robbing the city left and right to finance their dastardly deeds, and also are randomly attacking people. The cops are trying to catch one of the monsters to study. Mutants injure a doctor and get a hold of some attack plans, but are spotted by some really odd looking children and a police detective. The detective looks for help at a private hospital, but it is really a secret Zimarian base. The Evil Hospital Doctor sends some Batman-shirted goons to hurt the detective and odd-children, but Starman once again shows up and a fight ensues, him winning. The scientists are now working on not only an Evil Space Brain Destroying Formula, but a formula to prevent monster fission. As part of their master plan, the Zimarians try to kill the odd-looking children. Starman again stops them, but the brother is hurt, and his sister takes him to the private hospital that is an evil base. The boy follows the head doctor into an underground base and overhears the Batman Aliens preparing to attack at dawn. The Odd-looking sister sends Starman to check on her brother (because Starman should really be wasting his time with such things) and he gets inside the base and the Batman Rejects attack! This sets up another trademark Starman fight sequence that lasts 10-15 minutes and is basically him dancing around beating up all of the bad guys. Then the Batmen escape.

Now they have a new plot, to assassinate a ruler of an unnamed Middle Eastern country, but their trap is a trap back on them when Starman is revealed to be who they thought the ruler was in disguise. The Evil Doctor from the hospital throws a nuclear grenade, but it fails to be effective and they are all arrested. In response, the mutant monsters start killing people indiscriminately. Or at least a weird looking woman starts appearing before other women and causes them to faint. These scenes are in here mostly to fill up time until the next plot point, which involves Evil Dr. Kurakawa’s brother, Evil Dr. Okawa. Dr. Okawa is leading a germ war on the humans, and commands the original germ (Germs obey orders now?). Dr. Okawa unleashes his disease which starts killing people, and armies of mutant bat people march across the world. Thank goodness Starman is here to prevent all their deaths. Oh, wait, he isn’t and they are dying left and right.

Starman finally gets off his lazy punk butt and locates the Zimarian hideout, and notifies the police for backup, and heads in. And thus begins another long long long long long long fight sequences as Starman beats up hundreds of Zimarians dressed as Batman. Evil Dr. Okawa and an alien with a hook for a hand turn the original germ into that evil mutant woman that was terrorizing women earlier in the film. Starman beats down the hook-handed alien, but Germlady shoots fire at him and their clash of the Titans begins. It is a glorious battle, complete with Dr. Okawa repeatedly yelling “Kill him!” like he’s straight out of a comic book. Starman triumphs, the Germlady explodes, and Dr. Okawa dies somehow. Now Starman must find the Evil Space Brain before it is too late. One of the Evil Batmutants shows up, and Starman lets it escape so he can follow it to the Zimarian Supreme Headquarters (How many Headquarters are there?). After and even longer long long long long long long fight sequence, Starman defeats the aliens, mutants, batmen, bat mutants, germ women, and hook-handed invaders, and Dr. Sakurai and his whole family show up with the secret formula that will destroy the Evil Space Brain, and it is no more. Starman waves goodbye, knowing he still has two more movies he will show up in.

This was a drop in quality over the previous film, mostly because the secondary characters were entirely useless except for developing the secret brain dissolving formula. At least in the last one other characters could do more than get knocked out. When the cops did show up here, they usually were ineffective unless there were dozens of them. And once again, lots of people die, and they never really resolve the plaque storyline, I guess when the original germ was killed, the rest of the germs died, just like the rest of our diseases.
